Coverup Tattoo
If you’re looking for a coverup tattoo in Chicago, Logan Square Tattoo offers experienced guidance for everything from small name cover-up tattoos to larger rework and cover-up sleeve tattoo projects. Cover-ups require more than just putting new ink over old ink—they take smart design, careful application, and an artist who understands how tattoos heal over time. If you have an old tattoo you want to move on from, we’re happy to review your piece and talk through your options. For a deeper look at how cover-up tattoos work, what makes them successful, and when laser may help, read our full guide below.
Why Experience Matters With Coverup Tattoos

Before

After coverup by Pablo Mire
A good coverup tattoo artist is not just thinking about how the tattoo looks the day you get it done. They are thinking about how it heals, how the old ink will affect the new tattoo, and how to design something that still reads well over time.
That matters because:
-
old tattoo pigment can still influence the healed result
-
scar tissue can affect how the skin takes new ink
-
cover-ups often need stronger design structure than fresh tattoos
-
making something look covered fresh is easier than making it heal well
-
poor cover-ups usually create fewer options later
At Logan Square Tattoo, we take a realistic approach to cover-up tattoos. If we think a design will work, we will tell you. If we think something needs to be adjusted, expanded, or lightened first, we will tell you that too.

Coverup Tattoo Consultations
The first step in any tattoo cover-up consultation is understanding what you already have and what you want the new tattoo to become.
When reviewing a coverup tattoo project, we look at:
-
the size and placement of the existing tattoo
-
how dark and saturated it is
-
whether there is visible or hidden scar tissue
-
how much flexibility there is in the new design
-
whether laser tattoo removal for cover-up may be worth considering
A lot of people come in asking whether their tattoo can be covered. The answer is often yes, but not always in the exact way they first imagined. Cover-ups tend to work best when there is some flexibility around size, contrast, placement, and subject matter.
If your project is more complex, we may recommend an in-person consultation so we can properly assess your skin, saturation, and options.

Can any tattoo be covered with a coverup tattoo?
Not every tattoo can be covered in every style, but many can be reworked or covered successfully with the right design approach. The darker, larger, and more saturated the tattoo is, the more limitations there usually are.
Does a cover-up tattoo have to be bigger than the old tattoo?
Usually, yes. A cover-up tattoo often needs more space so the old tattoo can be broken up visually without creating one dark, muddy area. Going bigger usually gives better results.
Will the old tattoo still show through a coverup tattoo?
Sometimes, yes. A good tattoo cover-up is designed to make the old tattoo unreadable, not necessarily to erase every trace of it. Tiny parts of the old tattoo may still exist under the new one, especially up close or over time.
How do I know if I need laser tattoo removal for cover-up?
If the existing tattoo is very dark, very saturated, or sits in a place where the new tattoo needs lighter values, laser tattoo removal for cover-up may help. The best way to know is through a consultation.
How long does a cover-up tattoo take to heal?
Surface healing happens relatively quickly, but deeper healing and settling take longer. With cover-up tattoos, it often takes time to really see how the tattoo resolves once the skin fully recovers.
Are cover-up tattoos more difficult than regular tattoos?
Yes. Cover-up tattoos are more technical than tattooing fresh skin because the artist has to account for old pigment, scar tissue, skin texture, and how the final piece will age.
Can scar tissue affect a coverup tattoo?
Absolutely. Scar tissue can change how the skin takes pigment and how the tattoo heals. That is why experience matters so much in scar cover-up tattoo work and in any tattoo cover-up done over older, damaged skin.
Is blackout the best option for covering an old tattoo?
Not always. A blackout tattoo cover-up can work well for some people, but it does not automatically make old tattoos disappear. Previous tattooing and scar tissue can still show through.
